Abstract
The purpose of this CST technical recommendation is to define the file formats for the exchange and exploitation of cinematographic programs with a view to their exploitation on all types of media. The technical recommendation defines the following two areas:

● The file formats of the digitised picture and sound elements;

● The format of the exchange container comprising a playlist of these digitised programs (a structured set of information called a "Package").

The "container" set must be chosen so as to cause no alteration of the picture and sound files and must be based on an open international standard or norm guaranteeing its interoperability. As this technical aspect may change in its formulation, it is set apart in a technical annex to this recommendation.

The founding principle of this recommendation concerning the digitization of works is that it must be done in a way that guarantees the preservation of the technical and artistic quality of the original elements.

La présente recommandation technique de la CST a pour objet de définir les formats de fichiers d’échange et d’exploitation des programmes cinématographiques en vue de leur exploitation sur tous types de supports. La recommandation technique définit les deux domaines suivants :

● Les formats de fichier des éléments images et sons numérisés ;

● Le format du conteneur d’échange comprenant une liste de lecture de ces programmes numérisés (ensemble structuré d’informations appelé “Package”).

L’ensemble “conteneur” doit être choisi de façon à n’apporter aucune altération des fichiers images et sons et doit être basé sur un standard international ouvert ou une norme garantissant son interopérabilité. Cet aspect technique pouvant évoluer dans sa formulation, il est détaché dans une annexe technique à la présente recommandation.

Le principe fondateur de la présente recommandation concernant la numérisation des œuvres est que celle-ci doit se faire de façon à garantir la conservation de la qualité technique et artistique des éléments d’origine.

French-language CST recommendation (2016 revision) defining the "mezzanine file" for exchanging and exploiting cinematographic works, by the CST-RT021-MFFW working group (CST and FICAM members): source selection, minimum scan resolutions, linear 16-bit XYZ 4:4:4 picture, 24-bit/48 kHz PCM sound, packaged as a lossless JPEG 2000 / MXF IMP conforming to SMPTE ST 2067-40 (IMF Application #4, which replaced this recommendation’s earlier container annex). Its color-transformation annex is a separate document.
