Picture Characteristics of Image-Orthicon and Vidicon Camera Tubes

Abstract: The vidicon has not generally replaced the image orthicon for live broadcast work in spite of the fact that its resolution is as good or better, and its effective sensitivity now approaches that of the image orthicon. This is primarily due to the basic difference in the picture characteristics of the vidicon and the image orthicon. The secondary electron redistribution characteristics of the image orthicon, which are at times criticized as producing an inaccurate picture, can contribute to making the picture appear to be a somewhat better picture than the TV system is normally capable of producing, when the human eye and brain are considered as part of the system. These characteristics also compensate for some of the basic aberrations in a TV electron-optical system. Basic differences in the signal characteristics generated by the image orthicon and the vidicon are described in detail. Methods for obtaining the best performance from each are suggested.
