This is primarily due to the basic difference in the picture characteristics of the vidicon and the image orthicon. The secondary electron redistribution characteristics of the image orthicon, which are at times criticized as producing an inaccurate picture, can contribute to making the picture appear to be a somewhat better picture than the TV system is normally capable of producing, when the human eye and brain are considered as part of the system. These characteristics also compensate for some of the basic aberrations in a TV electron-optical system. Basic differences in the signal characteristics generated by the image orthicon and the vidicon are described in detail.
