Sensitivity and Motion Capturing Ability of Television Camera Tubes

Abstract: The sensitivities of various camera tubes are determined in terms of the illumination levels required for both standard and nonstandard television scanning rates. For convenience, these values are given in terms of equivalent ASA film exposure index values to facilitate the use of a common exposure meter to determine scene light or iris settings. The effective rapidities of response of various camera tubes are also evaluated in terms of the ability to stop motion. This factor is evaluated both from the standpoint of deriving intelligence from the signal and from the standpoint of the esthetics of the picture, i.e., absence of negative image or “long-tail” carry-over of signal. The effects of overexposure or of underexposure on the speed of response of different camera tubes is also illustrated.
