Abstract: This article expands upon the keynote address presented by Roland J. Zavada at the 133rd SMPTE Technical Conference in Los Angeles, CA, on October 26, 1991. It was originally published in the Journal in March 1992 and is presented here to provide some historical insight into SMPTE as we begin the year 2000. Part I appeared in the January Journal.

Roland J. Zavada retired from his position as Standards Director for Imaging Technologies, Corporate Standards, at Eastman Kodak, in 1990. During his 40-year career there, he also coordinated the activities of the Consumer Video and Broadcast Telecine and Television Evaluation Laboratories. Prior to working in television and film-related transcoding, he worked in project coordination and new product development and was a principal member of the teams that developed the Instamatic, the Super 8 and the Instant Photography systems. — Zavada began his standards activity with SMPTE in 1962. By 1966, he assumed responsibility for the national and international standardization of the Super-8 system and became chairman of SMPTE's 16mm and 8mm Technology Committee. He also chaired the ISO/TC-36 Super 8 Technology Committee and led the U.S. delegation to ISO/TC-36-Cinematography for 16 years. For seven years, Zavada chaired the ISO-IEC Coordinating Committee on Image Technology. He also served two terms as chairman of the American National Standards Institute's Image Technology Standards Board. — In 1985, Zavada was awarded the SMPTE Progress Medal for Technical Achievement, and the Leo East Award for Rochester's Engineer of the Year. In 1986, he received the SMPTE Agfa Gevaert Gold Medal for outstanding achievement in film and video imaging interface. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) presented him with their Meritorious Service award in 1990. In 1993, “The Rollie” award was developed in his name by the Committee for Graphic Arts Technologies Standardization, '(CGATS), to recognize those individuals who followed in his footsteps by making a significant contribution to US graphic arts standards through active participation in accredited standards activities. — Zavada is a Fellow of SMPTE, the British Kinematographie Sound and Television Society (BKSTS), and the Audio Engineering Society (AES). — Roland J. Zavada received a B.S. in Chemistry from Purdue University, an Associate Degree in Photographic Science from the Rochester Institute of Technology and an MBA from the University of Rochester.
