- Abstract
- As part of their operating-authorization files issued by the Centre National de la Cinématographie, motion-picture theaters must comply with the provisions of the Afnor standard NF S 27001 "Dimensional characteristics of motion-picture theaters". This standard defines the "minimum" layout conditions for the structural elements of the theatre (screen, seats, projection booth), in order to guarantee the spectator "correct" conditions for perceiving the cinematographic show. Since 1954, the Commission Supérieure Technique has been tasked with reviewing plans for the construction or structural modification of theaters, for a provisional clearance to the CNC. Since 1980, this prior review of plans has been complemented by an on-site visit within three months of opening, to validate the theatre's compliance. This visit allows a final technical clearance to be issued to the CNC, which in particular determines the theatre's "official" capacity. The characteristics defined in the standard are minimums. They are an "average" that guarantees the "average" spectator acceptable comfort. During technical visits of theaters by CST engineers (more than 10,000 visits since 1980), it became apparent, in discussions with exhibitors and architects, that these minimum conditions could be exceeded to move towards a notion of "maximum" comfort, guaranteeing all spectators the best conditions for perceiving cinematographic works. When the Guide de l'Exploitation was written in 1993, a table of the Afnor standard's values was therefore drawn up, with additional values which, on the same criteria, would define the basis for improved comfort as part of a quality label. This document gives the values of this "Qualité Confort" (Quality Comfort) recommendation.
