Abstract
For years the vast majority of audio/video assets have been moved between locations using both streamed audio/video and tape. With the advent of local area networking (LAN) and wide area networking (WAN) technology and associated infrastructure, new ways to move assets are available to augment the existing methods. This paper gives motivation for broadcasters to use WAN methods for moving media files. Several very compelling reasons for using WAN technology as part of a broadcast facility are outlined. A brief overview of WAN technology is given with emphasis on the salient points for the broadcaster. Six different WAN technologies are compared. Some favorable trends are presented with a view to the future.

Al Kovalick has been with Hewlett-Packard since 1974. For the last seven years, he has concentrated on digital video for broadcast, post-production, and video-on-demand applications. He is currently the director of technical strategy for the Video Communications Division. In this role, he is involved in strategic planning, technology assessment, and systems architecture for video servers and other video products. Kovalick has contributed to Hewlett-Packard's MediaStream video server, digital video disc recorder, and Vidjet video printer. He holds 18 U.S. and foreign patents with others pending in various areas. Kovalick is actively involved in SMPTE, where he took a leadership role in writing the SMPTE 273 Standard on Status Monitoring and Diagnostics and was a principal contributor to the SMPTE/EBU Task Force Report. He has an MSEE from the University of California at Berkeley.
