- Abstract
- In an ever increasing way, video/audio assets are becoming digital. The days of analog-based video and audio are waning. As we usher in a production and distribution culture established on digital assets, new opportunities and challenges face us. One of the challenges involves moving digital assets from place to place. Why not continue to use tape as the agency of transfer? Because although tape has its application space, networked video offers new capabilities not offered by tape. So let's focus on using network and channela technology to move digital assets. At first this may seem to be a solved problem. After all, haven't computer users done this for years? Well, yes and no. Although technology from the networking and computer sectors is useful for moving digital files, moving video/audio “essence” in a frame synchronized, fixed delay, realtime way with little or no loss is a foreign concept to most users of networks and computers. As will be shown, judicious selection of networking and computer technology will allow us to create a reference architecture for asset transfer and streaming.

bio
Al Kovalick has been with Hewlett-Packard since 1974. For the last six years, Kovalick has concentrated on digital video for broadcast, post-production, and video-on-demand applications. Currently, he is the principal architect for the Video Communications Division of HP, involved in strategic planning, technology assessment, and systems architecture for video servers and other video products. He has contributed to HP's broadcast video server, digital videodisc recorder, and vidjet video printer. Kovalick has been granted 18 U.S. and foreign patents and several others are pending. Actively involved in SMPTE, Kovalick took a leadership role in writing the SMPTE 273 Standard on Status Monitoring and Diagnostics. Currently he is a contributing member of the SMPTE/EBU Task Force for file transfer protocols. Kovalick is an established author and speaker on various video systems topics and has an MSEE from the University of California at Berkeley. - Copyright
