- Abstract
- A reflective optical videodisc system with laser readout is described in terms of its consumer and educational/institutional applications. The system will find practical realizations in a home information/entertainment center and in more elaborate machines with peripherals for the larger applications. A major feature is the complete interchangeability of all programmed discs so that any disc can he played on any model of the machine. The educational/institutional model can, at the user's discretion, be interfaced with a microprocessor, a keyboard, and/or a variety of other peripherals. The first few thousand tracks on the disc can store branching instruction sequences to control the display of frames on the rest of the disc. Paragraph, chapter, and frame-by-frame selection of mixed still and motion sequences is possible with identification codes. One side of the disc provides up to 30 min of continuous play in color or monochrome with two discrete audio channels. The NTSC color system is used so as to ensure that neither the disc nor the videodisc system is a limiting factor in performance.
