The Use of Metal Halide Lamps on Exteriors

Abstract: The increasing use in Europe of floodlighting and spotlighting equipment employing metal halide discharge lamps on exteriors for shooting either color film or color television has resulted in a corresponding decrease in the use of conventional incandescent lighting equipment and carbon arcs. ORTF (French Television) has by now acquired considerable experience in using lighting units with metal halide lamps of 575, 1200, 2500 and 4000 watts. The advantages of metal halide lamps include high luminous efficacy, high correlated color temperature (approximating to daylight) and small physical dimensions. The disadvantages are the delay in re-striking, unless the lamp is still moderately hot, and the fact that conventional dimming cannot be used, at any rate for the present. Up to recent times, the flicker or “beat” obtained in the course of filming was a problem, but recent developments give every hope that this has now been resolved. Several kinds of available lighting units are described.
