Abstract: The need for provision for interconnection of stations was foreseen early in television. The general nature of the steps by which long-haul (particularly wire) communication circuits were adapted to television signals is considered. In an historical survey these points are reviewed: (1) the legacy of telegraph and picture transmission arts, (2) general picture quality, (3) securing the bandwidth, (4) modulation and intermodulation, (5) phase distortion and echoes, (6) noise, and (7) color.
