The days of analog-based video and audio are waning. As we usher in a production and distribution culture established on digital assets, new opportunities and challenges face us. One of the challenges involves moving digital assets from place to place. Why not continue to use tape as the agency of transfer? Because although tape has its application space, networked video offers new capabilities not offered by tape. So let's focus on using network and channela technology to move digital assets. At first this may seem to be a solved problem. After all, haven't computer users done this for years? Well, yes and no. Although technology from the networking and computer sectors is useful for moving digital files, moving video/audio “essence” in a frame synchronized, fixed delay, realtime way with little or no loss is a foreign concept to most users of networks and computers.
