Abstract
This article gives the historical background of the D-1 format, its basic concepts, and supporting technical information. It also describes possible scanner configurations proposed by different manufacturers as practical implementations of the D-1 recording format. It suggests that tests now being conducted will lead to the interchangeability of tapes recorded with different scanner configurations.
