Abstract
High-definition television will not remain as it is today; it will undergo evolution. In this article, instead of one studio standard, a hierarchical family of compatible standards is proposed. This concept and its implementation in the studio environment are discussed on the basis of a conceptual model of studio functions. The relationship between the studio and the outside world — in particular, the problem of interfacing different studio standards — is considered. For minimum disadvantages, there should be maximum horizontal, vertical, and temporal co-siting of samples in the different standards. The proposed hierarchy uses sequential scanning at upper as well as lower levels, thereby retaining its benefits through reduced sampling rates. The hierarchy is based on CCIR Rec. 601 and uses a 50-Hz field rate. Feasibility has been proved and implementation partially achieved.
