Abstract
An advanced method of performing standards conversion from 50 Hz/1250 lines to 59.94 Hz/1050 lines to assess the quality of converted 59.94-Hz pictures is presented. Developed in the Eureka HDTV project, this movement-compensation technique assigns a motion vector to each pixel of the output field, giving the virtual position of the pixel in the neighboring input fields from which the pixel is then interpolated. A precise motion analyzer allows interpolation of the majority of pixels. A second mode based on failure detection in the motion field interpolates pixels where the motion estimation is not reliable. A large set of 4:2:2-format sequences was converted as down-scaled computer simulations of pictures produced in the proposed high-definition European standard. The resulting quality compares advantageously with that of known techniques.
