- Abstract
- The first charge-coupled device (CCD) used by Sony in a broadcast camera was an interline-transfer imager. The device offers high sensitivity and a resolution compatible with that of 1/2-in. analog recording VTRs. Because of its wide dynamic range, sensitivity, and highlight-handling characteristics, it ensures consistent picture capture of poorly lit scenes. The interline-transfer imager, however, is vulnerable to vertical smear on severe highlights. A new CCD combines frame-transfer operation with the interline-transfer mechanism. This CCD offers removal of vertical smear and the ability to incorporate an electronic shutter. A new camera has been built around this CCD, and a companion portable control unit extends its application to electronic field production.
