Abstract: Simultaneous pickup and electrostatic storage of optical information are accomplished by using a transducer consisting of a pickup tube with a layer of photoconductor overlaid by a thin layer of highly insulating material. Recording is achieved by simultaneous optical exposure of the photoconductor and electronic beam contact to the insulator. A charge pattern corresponding to the optical pattern remains on the insulator. During the storage period, which may be for several days, the target is insensitive to light and radiation. When readout is desired, the charge image is read by an electron beam, as in a television pickup tube. The images may be stored on fixed targets or on a flexible tape.
