Abstract: The basic principles and advantages of recording and storing optical images in the form of equivalent electrical charge patterns on a special kind of flexible tape are presented. An experimental model of a frame-type camera system which was designed to demonstrate the feasibility of this method of recording is described. Characteristics of the camera and its method of operation are discussed. The paper describes the “prepare” or “erase” process, the “writing” or recording process and the “readout” process. The results of preliminary tests which are reported verify the validity of the basic concepts involved in this kind of video recording system.
