Abstract: Earth satellites provide meteorology with an observing platform commensurate with the global nature of weather. One of the most promising satellite observations is of cloud distribution and type. Several image-sensing systems are being considered. Cloud images, both day and night with a resolution of about 0.5 mile, are ultimately desired. Problems in sensing instrumentation, communications, processing and data presentation must be solved before an operational system becomes a reality.
