- Abstract
- In all-Internet protocol studio environments, synchronization is provided via the precision time protocol (PTP), replacing legacy technologies like synchronization generator locking. PTP profiles such as SMPTE 2059-2:2015 or Audio Engineering Society 67 deliver optimal performance when operated in fully PTP-aware networks. To avoid costly reinvestment, existing state-of-the-art network infrastructure should be retained whenever possible, adding PTP-aware devices only at critical locations in the network. For a set of topologies typically found in large media networks, synchronization quality is measured with respect to both accuracy and lock time. The presented measurements are performed in the presence of a varying amount of media traffic. Subsequently, the networks are enhanced by exchanging single components with PTP-aware devices at distinct locations carrying out the identical measurements. Configurations with PTP-aware components located at the edge of the network are compared with topologies in which PTP-aware components reside in the core, providing guidelines for optimizing existing networks for PTP.

Nikolaus Kerö received a master's degree in communication engineering with distinction from the Vienna University of Technology, after which he led the ASIC design division at the university's Institute of Industrial Electronics, successfully managing numerous research projects and industry collaborations. His research activities centered on distributed systems design, especially highly accurate and fault-tolerant clock synchronization. In 2001, he co-founded Oregano Systems Design & Consulting Ltd. as a university spin-off. As well as offering embedded systems design services to customers, Oregano transferred research results into a complete product suite for highly accurate clock synchronization under the brand name syn1588, for which Kerö manages both development and marketing. He is an active member of the IEEE 1588 standardization committee and the SMPTE 32NF standards group and holds frequent seminars on clock synchronization both for industry and academia.Thomas Kernenbio
Thomas Kernen is a technical leader in Cisco's Service Provider Video Software and Solutions (SPVSS) architecture team. His main area of focus is defining architectures for transforming the broadcast industry to an all IP video infrastructure. Kernen is a member of the IEEE Communications and Broadcast Societies, SMPTE, and the Royal Television Society (RTS). He is active within a number of trade and industry organizations including the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) Project, the SMPTE Standards Committees and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) working groups.Tobias Mullerbio
Tobias S. Müller received a bachelor's' degree in electronic engineering and a master's degree in embedded systems from the University of Applied Science in Vienna. In 2013, he obtained a master's degree for his thesis “Optimization of the Control Algorithm for an IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol Engine,” which focuses on his main field of expertise: clock synchronization in distributed, asynchronous computer systems. He is currently employed by Oregano Systems as software and system engineer and works on complex projects in the field of high precision clock synchronization. In 2014, Müller started his second master's degree program in software engineering. He is working on his master's thesis on automatic error detection and correction in large clock synchronization networks.Martin Schimandlbio
Martin Schimandl studied information technology at the University of Applied Sciences in Wiener Neustadt; his master thesis focused on optimizing hardware based Ethernet packet scanning engines for efficient PTP implementations. In 2009, Schimandl joined Oregano Systems where is he a currently working as a senior embedded software design engineer with special focus on clock synchronization. His main areas of interest are efficient software design for resource limited embedded systems and fully automated multi-node software test systems. Schimandl is responsible for the complete IT infrastructure of the company as well. In his spare time, he enjoys reading novels of Jasper Fforde and contributes to various open source projects. - Keyword(s)
