- Abstract
- This paper introduces a concept for file delivery using the features of scalable (or hierarchical) media like the Joint Photographic Experts Group 2000 (JPEG 2000) image coding system. The innovation of this concept is that, due to the scalability feature, the recipient may start to work with the transmitted content even before completion of the transfer. For this, a reduced subvariant, derived from the scalable sources, will be transmitted in the first phase until the full media data reaches its destination. The recipient is therefore able to get a preview faster. Subsequent phases will add more and more information to the subvariant transmitted in the first phase. A concept called the “Substitution Method” (which was presented at the SMPTE 2012 Annual Technical Conference) enables the software running at the destination to rebuild the file structure of each media file and to simulate missing data so that the images can be used for further processing before the overall transmission is completed.

Heiko Sparenberg received a Diploma degree in computer science in 2004 and a Master's degree in 2006. He joined Fraunhofer IIS in Erlangen as a software engineer in 2006. Sparenberg is currently head of the Digital Cinema group at Fraunhofer, responsible for several software developments, including the easyDCP software suite for digital cinema. In 2015, he received a Ph.D. degree for his work, with focus on improved data workflows in a professional movie post-production using scalable media codecs including JPEG 2000 and H264.Siegfried Foesselbio
Siegfried Foessel is head of the Moving Picture Technologies department at the Fraunhofer IIS in Erlangen and spokesman of the Fraunhofer digital cinema alliance. He was responsible for projects such as the camera development ARRI D20/D21, the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) certification test plan, and the JPEG 2000 standardization for digital cinema. Foessel is member of various standardization bodies and organizations such as SMPTE, Fernseh-und Kinotechische Gesellschaft e.V. (FKTG), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the German Institute for Standardization (Deutsches Institut für Normung e.V [DIN]). He became a SMPTE Fellow in 2014. Foessel was the 2014 recipient of the Josef-von- Fraunhofer award for the development of easyDCP, a tool for creating and playback of Digital Cinema Packages. In 2014, he was elected president of the FKTG, the German equivalent to SMPTE. - Keyword(s)
