- Abstract
- The media enterprise is in the biggest transition of its life. Equipment, processes, and applications are moving towards Information Technology (IT) methods and infrastructure. The cloud is not just a buzz word; it is the future of the media facility. The IT/cloud momentum is unstoppable and every systems designer and technician will need to become well versed in IT and cloud technologies. This article reviews the important directions of media transport over IP, the domination of Ethernet, timing and sync via IP, web applications, software-defined infrastructures and the state of the cloud for media.

bio
Al Kovalick has worked in the field of media infrastructure and file-based workflows for the past 25 years. Previously, he was a digital systems designer and technical strategist for Hewlett-Packard. While at HP, he was the principal architect of HP's first VOD server. Following HP, from 1999 to 2004, he was the CTO of Pinnacle Systems. More recently, he served at Avid Technology as a Strategist and Avid Fellow. In 2012, Kovalick founded Media Systems Consulting in Silicon Valley specializing in media infrastructure and related technologies. Kovalick is an active speaker, educator, and author. He has presented over 50 papers at industry conferences worldwide. He holds 13 US patents. He is the author of the book Video Systems in an IT Environment (2009, 2nd ed). Al has a BSEE degree from San Jose State University and MSEE degree from the University of California at Berkeley. He is a SMPTE Fellow, Director of Education, recipient of the SMPTE David Sarnoff Medal and member of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society. - Copyright
