- Abstract
- Frame rates higher than the conventional 24 frames/sec have been proposed, and three movies of the film series, The Hobbit, have been shown in theaters in higher-frame-rate (HFR) three-dimensional (3D) format at 48 frames/sec/eye. This paper contributes to the debate whether HFR 3D is appreciated by the audiences over conventional 24 frames/sec/eye stereoscopic 3D. Subjective tests have been conducted in order to evaluate the effect of the frame rate on the reception of stereoscopic content in a cinema environment. The method used for the subjective tests is based on an International Telecommunications Union (ITU) recommendation leading to a subjective assessment in three categories related to image perception, these being smoothness of motion, sharpness of motion, and overall visual impression.

Wolfgang Ruppel holds a professorship for Media Technology at RheinMain University of Applied Sciences, Wiesbaden. His current research areas include stereoscopic 3D, digital cinema and post-production and mastering formats. Before joining RheinMain University, Ruppel worked for more than 10 years in various R&D units within Deutsche Telekom group. As head of Development Digital Cinema, he was responsible for the architecture and development of the digital cinema solutions of T-Systems. — Since 1994, Ruppel has been involved in various research projects and product developments in the areas of networked video solutions, digital cinema, and professional video distribution. — Ruppel holds Dr.-Ing. and Dipl.-Ing. degrees in communications engineering from Technical University of Darmstadt. He is a member of SMPTE, ITG (Informationstechnische Gesellschaft) and FKTG (Fernseh- und Kinotechnische Gesellschaft). Yannic Alff has been working as systems engineer at Kabel Deutschland Vertrieb und Service GmbH (Vodafone group) since 2014. His current responsibilities include operation of the video on demand back office and content delivery network infrastructure, the improvement of the DVB-C-monitoring platform, and big data analysis for troubleshooting. The contribution to this paper was achieved during a curricular research project at RheinMain University. Alff holds a B.Eng. degree in media technology from RheinMain University of Applied Sciences. Thomas Göllner has been working as systems engineer at Kabel Deutschland Vertrieb und Service GmbH (Vodafone group) since 2014. As member of the technical operations team, his current responsibilities include the service availability of the backend for the various set-top boxes. — Before joining Kabel Deutschland, Göllner freelanced as an ENG cameraman and video broadcast technician for more than six years. Over the past years, he had been studying media technology at RheinMain University of Applied Sciences. The contribution to this paper was achieved during a curricular research project at RheinMain University.
