Abstract: Welcome to SMPTE's Annual Progress Report! In this past year, the world's economy has continued its struggle to regain footing from a disastrous downturn. Fortunately for the entertainment industry, there are some notable bright spots, as the world citizens seek cost-effective entertainment. Nielsen's “State of the Media: Cross-Platform Report Q1 2011” identifies viewership up on all platforms, including a 22-minute/month increase for traditional television in the U.S. The growth of mobile devices world-wide is staggering, and content viewing on these devices, while still a small share in comparison to traditional channels, is flourishing. In the world of cinema, movie directors continue to push the creative/technical envelope as they witness the popularity of, and envision an even better future for, stereoscopic presentations. All of these are important indicators that the Society continues to hold a vital role in establishing standards, educating industry workers, and supporting its membership in social networking, as the world appetite for content expands.
