Abstract: At its January 2011 meeting, the SMPTE Board of Governors spent a day strategizing about how the organization can help Sections develop stronger ties to their local technical communities, thereby ensuring a strong and relevant SMPTE membership. It was a dynamic discussion with important ideas and challenges laid out for the group to consider. Among the specific topics of discussion were: ■ Understanding and promoting membership development at the local level ■ Creating education liaisons between Sections and local academic institutions ■ Developing resources and tools for Section leaders and managers ■ Improving SMPTE's website presence to better support Sections ■ Enhancing outreach to Sections outside of the U.S.
