- Abstract
- The paper looks at progress in the past 15 years, examines the likely changes in the next 15 years, explores the processes of making television, in the industry and at NBC. Quality improvements and cost reduction as prime motivators are discussed. New camera and recording techniques, software tools and automation are included. New facilities of the future at NBC are discussed, as is the contribution of standards to the industry. A standard for a 1/2" digital component recorder is proposed.

Michael J. Sherlock is president, operational and technical services, at the National Broadcasting Co. (NBC). From November 1982 until his latest appointment, Mr. Sherlock was executive vice-president, operations and technical services, NBC-TV. He served as the chief financial officer for sports, with the title of vice-president, finance and administration, NBC Sports, from November 1979 until February 1982. For nine months before that, he had been executive vice-president, production administration, NBC Finance, with the responsibility for the unit managers, TeleSales, and program merchandise areas. From 1977–1979, he was vice-president of business affairs and administration, NBC News, where he was in charge of the division's business, planning administration, and finances. He came to NBC News from the Hertz Corp., where he served as vice-president, administration. He first joined NBC in 1960 in business affairs, rising to the position of director of business administration in 1973, before moving to Hertz. Mr. Sherlock holds a Bachelor's degree in business administration from LeMoyne College in Syracuse. He is an officer of the Center for Advanced Television Studies, a member of the Presidential Advisory Council of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), the International Radio and Television Society, and the Symposium Committee of the International Television Symposium and Teechnical Exhibition, Montreux. - Copyright
