- Abstract
- In the past few years, the NTSC system has been subjected to considerable scrutiny by various researchers in an effort to squeeze every bit of potential picture performance from this well entrenched color standard which now serves more than 30 countries, and hundreds of millions of home receivers. This paper will describe a variety of recent developments that extend the usefulness of the NTSC signal format into the Advanced Television arena that is now of such great interest to television futurists. The improvements to be described affect all aspects of NTSC operations, including signal origination, videotape recording, professional and consumer displays, and some of the propagation problems associated with program delivery. The areas to be explored and defined include the new high performance consumer VCRs which employ unique processing circuitry to achieve picture quality superior to the best of current terrestrial broadcasting and cable delivery. In addition the authors will look at how the image display can be made to simulate HDTV performance through the use of line doubling and advanced motion interpolation techniques. The overall attempt of this paper is to give an overview of the various areas of NTSC image generation, processing, distribution and display, which can be improved substantially by the application of a variety of recently developed techniques. The demonstrable result is that a fully expanded NTSC system can indeed be used for many years to come as a fully compatible Advanced Television System, while the ultimate all-digital television broadcast system is under study and development.

bio
Yves C. Faroudja is founder and president of Faroudja Laboratories, Inc., Sunnyvale, Calif., where his current technical work focuses on optimizing NTSC signal performance at all stages to approach performance of high-definition television without a change in standard or bandwidth. Faroudja graduated from the Ecole Supérieure d'Electricité, Paris, with an M.S. degree in electrical engineering. He worked at ITT Research Laboratoires in France and at NATO in Italy as a research engineer until 1965, when he moved to the U.S. While working in Europe, Faroudja participated in three engineering “first”: the development and implementation of the first tide-power plant in the Rance estuary, the first transistorized Doppler radar, and the first laser activated on that continent. After arriving in the Bay Area 20 years ago, Faroudja worked in the area of color television, both as an engineer and as a consultant. In 1981 he founded Faroudja Laboratories, Inc. The company has been instrumental in improving noise-reduction and enhancement technologies, and more recently in developing NTSC encoders and decoders. Faroudja has developed and patented a number of significant new techniques for the improvement of color television images on professional and consumer VTRs, VCRs, cameras, and monitors. Faroudja is a Fellow of the SMPTE, a member of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Association des Anciens Eleves (ESE), National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), and Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), in addition to his acting as a technical consultant to various U.S. and foreign companies. He was honored with the 1987 Monitor Award for excellence in engineering and the David Sarnoff Gold Medal Award from the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers for his contributions in optimizing NTSC signal performance by developing techniques presently used in video-processing equipment.Joseph RoizenConsultant to Faroudja Laboratories, Inc.bio
Joseph Roizen has been a consultant to Faroudja Laboratories since the company started. In that capacity he has provided assistance on technical and marketing matters relating to the products manufactured by Faroudja Laboratories and on the licensing of the proprietary technology patented by Faroudja. Roizen is a Fellow of the SMPTE, The Royal Television Society, and the BKSTS. Over the years he has repeatedly served the SMPTE in many positions, including Governor, Program Chair, the Board of Editors, and many standards committees. - Copyright
