- Abstract
- With the finalization of High Definition Television (HDTV) standards, one of the immediate tasks for broadcasters, production companies, and media conglomerates around the world is to prepare content for future high definition distribution later this decade. This is creating the need for facilities to have production tools that are able to work interactively with HDTV formats in addition to SMPTE 259M and CCIR-601. This paper documents the current abilities of open industry standard graphics workstations and servers to manipulate images in the proposed HDTV resolutions for editing and visual effects. It also quantifies the size and bandwidth requirements of HD throughout the computer system, the HD input and output options to workstations, and the ability of computer networks and servers to act as the highdefinition distribution system in a production facility. The goal is to demonstrate that computer-based production solutions promise to be the most economical and flexible path to offering HDTV services, and are immediately productive assets for standard-definition and film projects.
