This is creating the need for facilities to have production tools that are able to work interactively with HDTV formats in addition to SMPTE 259M and CCIR-601. This paper documents the current abilities of open industry standard graphics workstations and servers to manipulate images in the proposed HDTV resolutions for editing and visual effects. It also quantifies the size and bandwidth requirements of HD throughout the computer system, the HD input and output options to workstations, and the ability of computer networks and servers to act as the highdefinition distribution system in a production facility.
