Abstract
The Dolby Digital (AC-3) audio coding system is the means to deliver high quality multichannel audio to the consumer. The system is used by many media, including LaserDisc, DVD, cable, satellite and terrestrial DTV. This paper will present an overview of the Dolby Digital coding system, and delineate the important features which ensure that high quality program content can be delivered to, and meet the needs of, a wide range audience of listeners with differing requirements in audio presentation.

bio
Steve Lyman began is professional life designing custom audio equipment for a recording studio and for a console manufacturer. He built the audio systems for several small outside broadcast vans then moved to Central Dynamics where he worked on system design of large video production switchers. After this introduction to TV, he became the Canadian field representative for Tektronix for their television and communications test equipment. He joined the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 1980 where he developed a system of standard audio and video measurement techniques and was heavily involved with CBC's efforts to implement High Definition Television, Digital Audio Broadcasting and other new technologies. In 1996, he moved to the Research and Business Development department of Dolby Laboratories to help implement multichannel audio systems for Digital Television Broadcasting. Steve has been involved in the development of audio and video standards within the Audio Engineering Society, IEEE and SMPTE throughout his career and is a Fellow of the AES.
Craig ToddDolby Laboratories, San Francisco
bio
Craig Todd currently holds the title of Senior Member of the Technical Staff, and has been with Dolby Laboratories for more than 20 years. Mr. Todd has been involved with the development of multichannel sound for over 20 years, beginning with his work on the Dolby Surround Sound matrix system. More recently he has worked on the development of technology for digital audio coding and broadcasting. For the last several years, Mr. Todd has concentrated on multichannel digital audio for television. The result of his efforts is the Dolby Digital (AC-3) coding technology, and its acceptance, by the US HDTV “Grand Alliance” and the FCC Advisory Committee, for incorporation into the U.S. HDTV broadcast standard. Mr. Todd holds a Bachelors Degree in Physics from the California Institute of Technology. He is active in many standards activities, including ATSC, DVB, IEC, AES, ITU, CEMA, and SMPTE. He is a Fellow of the AES, and is currently Chairman of ITU-R Working Party 10C.
