Abstract
Legacy methods for transporting metadata severely limit the type, bandwidth, and utility of their payloads. ST 2110-41, the Fast Metadata Framework, is particularly suited to user-defined and novel applications. It allows user-defined metadata without the legacy constraints or specialized encoding of ST 2110-40 and ST 2110-31. SiriusXM uses a combination of greenfield and retrofit builds to blend the best parts of existing standards and proprietary systems while solving contemporary problems in a modern and flexible way. This paper reviews implementations of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers Digital Program Insertion (SCTE DPI) triggers and proprietary program-associated data within ST 2110-41 flows. The limitations of the Fast Metadata Framework are addressed, especially the management of heterogeneous essence synchronization with diverse processing pipelines, compounding timing plane issues. Constraints on the standards-setting process, as they impact the development and implementation of innovative, flexible systems, are also discussed.
