Abstract
According to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), broadcasting “should strive to reuse, as much as possible, existing IT and Internet Standards to leverage the research and development investments of this much wider industry. [Broadcast workflows] should be implementable in software running on standard IT servers, so enabling flexible, agile and scalable infrastructures.” We outline three foundational layers of Accelerated Server Hardware, Virtualization, and Software Composability that together facilitate this goal. We explain how the technologies in these layers can be applied to build unlimited Media Nodes that can run anywhere and be managed with standard IT and data center tools.

Author(s)
Richard Hastie
bio
Richard Hastie is a senior business development director for NVIDIA (previously Mellanox), Santa Clara, CA specializing in video, cloud, and edge use cases. He has worked across information technology for over 25 years in a variety of different verticals including telecommunications, financial services, cloud services, and media and entertainment. He currently focuses on media use cases across the cloud, on-premises, and edge landscapes. He has worked in and around the broadcast production industry for nearly 10 years. During this time, he has been at the forefront of the digital transition to IP-based networking, playing a key role in the establishment and growth of Studio Video over IP. Hastie's main focus is supporting customers and partners deploying leading video and edge solutions for all markets. He has a strong passion for reducing customer costs and improving business agility. He sees software-defined broadcast as the future and operating agnostically across on-premises, hybrid, and cloud infrastructures as being the key to optimizing and democratizing the future of broadcast and content creation.
Gareth Sylvester-Bradley
bio
Gareth Sylvester-Bradley is a principal engineer at NVIDIA, Santa Clara, CA, and currently serving as the chair of the Networked Media Open Specifications (NMOS) Architecture Review Group in the Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA). He focuses on building software toolkits and agile, collaborative industry specifications to deliver open, software-defined, hardware-accelerated media workflows for professional broadcast, live production, medical imaging, industrial video, and related ecosystems. He has contributed to all the AMWA NMOS specifications, maintains the AMWA NMOS Testing Tool, and led Sony's open-source NMOS software implementation.
Thomas True
bio
Thomas True is a senior applied engineer for professional video and image processing in NVIDIA's Enterprise Solutions Group, Santa Clara, CA. In this role, he works at the intersection of video I/O and the graphic processing unit (GPU), where he focuses on the integration of GPU and networking technologies into broadcast, video, and film applications ranging from previsualization to postproduction and live to air. Prior to joining NVIDIA, he was an applications engineer at SGI. He received a BS degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY, and an MS degree in computer science from the Graphics Laboratory, Brown University, Providence, RI. He has spoken on the application of the GPU in broadcast and postproduction at the SMPTE Annual Technical Conference and SMPTE Section meetings.
