- Abstract
- Network infrastructure provisioning is a critical subset of the automated deployment of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC)/Radio-Canada’s Media-Over-Internet Protocol (IP) Data Center. As the on-air date approached, it became clear that to respond to the fast-changing production needs, traditional network provisioning methods were inadequate. As we began to explore various automation solutions, we realized that a new NetDevOps culture needed to be cultivated within our organization. This article will present the architecture and implementation of CBC’s network automated deployment workflow in collaboration with Arista. We believe these tools and methods will be applicable as a way forward to many media-over-IP projects at all scales.

bio
Sunday Nyamweno is a lead architect with CBC/Radio-Canada, Montreal, QC, Canada, where for the past ten years, he has solved problems related to video encoding, satellite transmission, color science, and systems integration. He received an MSc degree in radio frequency wireless communications from Leeds University, Leeds, U.K., and a PhD degree from McGill University, Montreal, in 2012, where he specialized in video compression.Patrick Morinbio
Patrick Morin studied mechanical engineering but has never worked in the field. He chose instead to go into networking and telecommunications. Morin has worked in many types of enterprises, from verysmall to very large, which include ISPs, electronic commerce, banking, telecommunications, and media networking. He has been at CBC/Radio-Canada, Montreal, QC, Canada, for the last 14 years and the past five years as a network architect.Carl Buchmannbio
Carl Buchmann is a systems engineer at Arista Networks, Ottawa, ON, Canada. Having worked in technology for the past 20 years, he has worn a lot of different hats! At Arista, Buchmann works on the customer engineering team, assisting customers to design, automate, and deploy next-generation networks. He focuses on DevOps technologies and co-leads the global Ansible Working Group, within Arista Networks, contributing to the development of Ansible collections, modules and roles.Alexandre Dugasbio
Alexandre Dugas is a project leader for core systems engineering at CBC/Radio-Canada, Montreal, QC, Canada, responsible for the configuration and staging processes of the realtime network of the New Maison Radio-Canada project in Montreal. He has more than ten years of experience in the broadcast and telecommunication industry. Before joining CBC, he was responsible for developing and implementing video hardware processing platforms and complex test sequences for various telecommunication and broadcast equipment companies. He received a master’s degree in video and picture processing from the University of Sherbrooke, Sherbrooke, QC, Canada.Felix Poulinbio
Felix Poulin is with the national public broadcaster CBC/Radio-Canada, Montreal, QC, Canada, where he is the director of Media-Over-IP Architecture and Laboratory, Montreal, QC. The laboratory is currently testing IP-based equipment for the new Montreal headquarters being progressively put on the air. Before that mandate, he was the lead expert on Live IP at the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), Switzerland, co-chairing the Joint Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA)/EBU/SMPTE/Video Services Forum (VSF) Task Force on Networked Media (JT-NM), organizing the yearly Network Technology Seminar (NTS) and leading expert groups. He was part of the Flemish national broadcaster (VRT) Sandbox LiveIP project—an early proof-of-concept of an all-IP studio, which won multiple awards including the prestigious International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) Innovation Award in 2016. He received a diploma in electrical engineering from Montréal’s Polytechnique, Montreal, QC, Canada, with his final thesis done at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, MA. He began working as an audio engineer at Solotech, Montreal, QC, on Cirque du Soleil and international productions. He is an active contributor to the SMPTE, EBU, and VSF and is a SMPTE Fellow. He co-chairs the AMWA NMOS Steering Committee. - Keyword(s)
