Abstract
Motion-picture film cleaning is essential to film laboratory operation. It is equally important to film-to-tape transfers, because every time film is handled or transported, it attracts contaminants. Film cleaning standardized on the use of methyl chloroform (1,1,1 trichloroethane) 37 years ago. As of December 31, 1995, this solvent will no longer be manufactured. The delicate composition of motion-picture film, along with the valuable, often irreplaceable information it contains, can be easily damaged if subjected to incompatible cleaning methods. This led to the search for effective alternates that are safe to the film, the operator, and the environment. Some of these are discussed in this paper.
