- Abstract
- Based on the new proposal/1/ for an Extended Definition TV system (EDTV) that is fully compatible with the existing standards, experiments have been done by computer simulation. Full compatibility implies that both existing and EDTV receivers can receive existing and EDTV signals which have the same bandwidth, without adaptors. In order to insert high resolution information, vacant frequency bands are found. Resolution can be improved both vertically and horizontally, the former by progressive scanning and line interpolation, and the latter through insertion of horizontal high resolution information. This causes little degradation even when received by present TV receivers. Experiments have been done on two kinds of schemes, which will be refered to as F and H schemes, hereafter. These schemes are applicable to CATV, CCTV, video storage, broadcasting, and direct broadcasting satellites (DBS), without any modification of existing facilities.
