Abstract
The 1080p24 format is gaining acceptance as a worldwide interchange format for film-originated material as well as 24 frame/sec video-originated material. For content mastered on film and transferred at 24 frames/sec, the conversion to 1080p24 is transparent. For content previously transferred at 30 frames/sec and subsequently processed, the conversion to 1080p24 becomes much more challenging. This process is complicated by such factors as electronic editing, vari-speed, video effects, video titles, fades, film compositing, and animation. Proper handling of these “exceptions” is essential to maintaining high quality through the conversion process. Also challenging is proper conversion of 25 frame/sec film to 1080p24. This paper will examine the advanced techniques required to properly address the conversion requirements to and from p24.

Scott Ackerman has over 18 years experience in standards and format conversion technologies. Prior to joining Teranex he served as director, sales engineering for the Business Development Group of Leitch, Inc., where he was responsible for high-definition products. Currently, Ackerman is director of systems product management for Teranex. He is a member of SMPTE and has authored and presented numerous papers at industry conferences.

bio
Jed Deame earned degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of Central Florida. He worked for three years in a leading Orlando post-production facility, then spent twelve years working in a variety of senior engineering positions at Lockheed Martin Corp. As a key engineer in the Image & Signal Processing Group, Deame led several video and image processor design teams, including the development of an image processing and MPEG compression system for the International Space Station. Deame was a founding team member of Teranex, and currently is director of product development. He is active in technology standardization groups such as SMPTE and ITS and speaks at numerous industry conferences.
