Abstract
This series of articles on color processing for digital cinema is based on the Engineering Guideline, SMPTE 432–1. The DC28 committee thought the information in that guideline would be more widely available if it were published as a series of articles in the SMPTE Journal. This first article in the series will describe the background in which the encoding equations were developed, and then describe the encoding equations that were finally accepted. From the encoding equations come the decoding equations. Finally, this article will describe the discussions that led to the choice of the encoding primaries and the exponent (1/2.6) in the equations.
