- Abstract
- Digital soundtracks have the capability of delivering lower distortion program signals with flat power bandwidth in the motion picture theater. Traditional two-way theater loudspeaker systems are presently being pushed far beyond their original performance limits with the new soundtracks, and three-way systems are now considered to be their future replacement. The authors have developed such systems for both small and large venues, and an installation of five new screen channels has been made in the Samuel Goldwyn Theater at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. System evolution, design, and performance will be discussed in detail in this paper.

Mark Mayfield has been with JBL Professional since 1994 and is responsible for all aspects of product development and marketing for JBL cinema products. Prior to joining that company, Mayfield was with Bose Corp., serving a number of executive marketing positions for the professional products group; previously, he had been a recording engineer for several years. He has published numerous articles on various aspects of cinema product design and system design and installation, and presents these topics at various industry seminars and meetings. He holds a masters degree in business administration and marketing from Boston College.David GrayDolby Laboratories, Los Angeles. Calif.bio
David Gray joined Dolby Laboratories in 1980 as an applications engineer in the Los Angeles office and became vice-president, Hollywood Film Production, in 1993. After completing his studies at Montana State University and Windham College, Gray spent ten years building custom electronics and electronic repair for music artists such as The Kinks, Orleans, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Steely Dan, and Frank Zappa. He received a Scientific and Engineering Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1992 and was the 1994 recipient of the SMPTE Samuel L. Warner Award for contributions to motion picture sound. Gray is active in both SMPTE and the AES, serving on numerous committees. He is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, currently serving on the sound branch executive committee and as chairman of the Theatre Standards Committee - Copyright
