Abstract: Set lighting equipment over the past fifty years has been influenced by innovations in areas such as film characteristics, sound and various production techniques. The equipment selected for attaining dramatic and artistic lighting effects is an important factor contributing to the success of both motion-picture and television productions. The dimming effects of the present energy crisis may be overcome in the future by the introduction of more efficient light sources. This paper is a revision of the “History of Motion-Picture Set Lighting Equipment” by M. A. Hankins, which was published in the July 1967 Journal. Developments in past and present equipment are discussed.
