Report on Screen Brightness Committee Theater Survey

Abstract: A Preliminary survey of 18 theaters by the Screen Brightness Committee in 1947<sup>1</sup> disclosed interesting indications of theater screen illumination practice in this country, but was inconclusive because the theaters covered represented too limited a sampling. A more extensive survey was not carried out at that time because of the lack of a suitable meter. More recently, the General Electric Company placed at the disposal of the Committee a meter which is better adapted to a theater survey. Consequently, during the summer of 1950, the Screen Brightness Committee of the Society undertook a survey of screen illumination and related factors in 100 representative indoor theaters. It was the Committee's purpose in this larger survey to cover a more representative segment of the theaters in this country and to obtain dependable data concerning their practices, with the underlying thought that observation and discussion of any undesirable conditions would promote better projection. At the present time, results are available on 125 theaters, representing all except the South-east and Pacific sections of the United States. It is believed that these results would not be greatly changed by representative coverage of these additional areas.
