New Concepts and Picture Quality of a 35mm Curved-Screen Shopping Center Theater

Abstract: At the request of a theater management company, an analysis was made for a corrected image on a curved screen, and recommendations were given. The screen was of standard material and cylindrically curved but at a radius shorter than the projection distance. The dimensions, projected image areas and screen brightness factors present in this operating theater are described. Photographs were taken of the projected image on the screen; brightness readings were taken at nine major points within the seating area for comparison purposes. The projected image area, possible “cropping” and the presence of apparent distortion, the projection of a curved image and its correct location, including the method for determining its location, are discussed. Cross-lighting problems related to a curved screen are also considered.
