Abstract
When utilizing film in television, either the original scene or its color photographic reproduction can be regarded as the information to be transmitted. We have analyzed two different overall additive color reproduction systems that correspond to these two different basic concepts. We also have analyzed the role film plays in the film-plus-telecine system. Our analysis results in the design of two totally different telecine systems, namely the “production-type” telecine and the “projection-type” telecine. A review of the basic concepts of existing camera-tube and flying-spot telecines indicates that, with the exception of the matrixed camera-tube telecines, none of the present-day telecines can be considered as either a production- or projection-type telecine. Hence, the color reproduction of the film-plus-telecine system neither compares to the colors of the original scene nor to those of its photographic reproduction. The color reproduction failures to be expected from incompletely designed telecine systems are discussed. Special attention is paid to the use of electronic masking as an attempt to correct poor color reproduction due to the unadapted interface of film and telecine.
