- Abstract
- Change, change, and more change. That's the drumbeat today's video industry is being forced to march to. Whether or not we are ready or willing, the engine of technology is driving the industry forward into the digital era at a dizzying pace. Built on the foundations of digital technology, new developments such as video file servers, MPEG encoders and decoders, nonlinear editors, etc., are being introduced at a rate faster than the video marketplace can digest them. Faced with this blizzard of technology, broadcasters, post-production facilities, equipment vendors, the cable industry, industrial video facilities, and standards-making organizations are being forced to examine and adjust their philosophies and activities in order to cope with the digital era and ensure their survival. The situation has been further complicated by the entry of new players such as computer, telephone, and software companies that are also seeking to participate in the digital video or information age of the future.
