Abstract
SLSC is a split-luminance, split-chrominance HDTV system that is fully compatible with NTSC standards. It uses 12 MHz of bandwidth when transmitted as a vestigial sideband AM signal. It can achieve 600 lines of horizontal and 483 lines of vertical resolution, while virtually eliminating cross-luminance interference. The basic SLSC system, including encoder, decoder, spectrum, and resolution, is described. An alternate method of encoding the chrominance is introduced that markedly decreases luminance/chrominance crosstalk. Three methods of increasing the aspect ratio from 4:3 to at least 5:3 are presented. Incremental cost/performance tradeoffs are also covered.
