Abstract: The color-television signal and color receivers should be balanced for the same value of reference white to achieve colorimetric fidelity and to minimize interference. The signal is balanced for white at 6800 K but, to achieve maximum brightness, 12,000,000 receivers in the United States are balanced near 9300 K. New phosphors now make it possible to achieve near-maximum brightness at 6800 K. The author discusses the cause and consequences of the difference and describes the steps to be taken if, because of the large number of receivers in homes, it should be decided that the signal should be changed.
