Abstract
It is the author's intention to call attention to some of the historical contributions made by Dutchmen to the development of cinematography, some of whom have not received their fair share of recognition. The contributions of four Dutchmen are briefly considered: Gemma Frisius (1508–1555), Cornells Drebbel (1572–1633), Christiaen Huygens (1639–1695) and Petrus van Musschenbroek (1692–1761), with references to others whose contributions are doubtful or have not been substantiated. The invention of the cinematograph by the Lumière brothers in 1895 has been arbitrarily chosen as the end of the historical period under consideration.
