- This is the last of 12 articles in our series on digital television. We have discussed many facets of the subject but have spent little time discussing how this technology might provide consumers with better pictures. In the studio, digital TV pictures will remain perfect until they are converted to NTSC or PAL for transmission, but after that all the usual aberrations will start to creep in. So how do we give our customers what they want — better quality, and more of it? Last month's article on compression described how we can offer more channels in the limited bandwidth. Now let's take a look at the quality issue. What ever happened to high-definition television?

David Strachan is director of marketing for Leitch Technology, Inc., based in Toronto, Canada. Born in the U.K., Strachan obtained Grad. IERE membership in London in 1968. Since that time he has worked in the television broadcasting industry, first with EMI and Rank in the U.K. and for several transmitter and satellite equipment suppliers in Canada, prior to joining Leitch as international sales manager in 1985. - Copyright
