Abstract
This paper presents a preliminary study aiming to define a nonlinear model of a high-density optical disk readout process based on the Volterra series. Because of the high linear density and reduced track pitch, the signal readout is not a linear process. To cope with such a delicate problem, the identification of a suitable nonlinear model is required. In accordance with the Hopkins analysis, a physical model based on the optical scalar theory was implemented. The result of this analysis was then used to build a nonlinear analytical model based on the Volterra series. Some encouraging results from the preliminary draft model are presented here.

Luigi Agarossi received a degree in electronic engineering from the University of Bologna in 1981. He started working as a researcher in the GTE Telecommunication Radio Link R&D Dept., within the area of baseband and IF signal processing. In 1987, he joined Philips Research Monza, where he has been working on storage systems and architecture. Agarossi has participated in many European projects and is now involved with the SMASH (AC018) project as a group leader. In collaboration with the University of Bologna, he is also involved in some basic theoretical studies related to optical channel modeling and detection in the area of high-density optical storage.
