Abstract
The year 1986 closed on a strong note for the U.S. motion-picture box office, making the year the second best in revenue gains on record. According to Variety, the number of U.S. feature films released during the year increased 4%, to 472 films. Over the last couple of years we have seen the number of domestic theatrical screens increase by 8% through August 1986 (22,384).
