Abstract
This article describes a completely new theoretical approach to NTSC encoding and decoding which diminishes the effects of cross color and other undesirable artifacts to nearly zero, thus rendering a final NTSC image of near-RGB quality. This technique will not only render better NTSC images to current viewers, but when combined with other current techniques, will enhance future TV services. The additional compatible improvements include progressive scan at the source, vertical prefiltering of luminance and chrominance signals, chroma gamma error correction, chroma bandwidth expansion, and receiver field memories. The authors will show that the potential of the NTSC system is much greater than anticipated, and that an optimized NTSC system can serve as a fully compatible alternative to any HDTV system for home delivery of excellent color television images.
